The report went on to say that the genetically modified alfalfa was developed by Mansanto to resist the herbicide Roundup®. This will allow farmers to spray chemicals to kill weeds without hurting the alfalfa. As a result, the use of these toxic herbicides has increased fifteen fold. Alfalfa is the fourth largest crop in the U.S. mainland.
